What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

BNG ensures that development delivers an evidence based positive outcome (‘net gain’) for biodiversity with the creation, restoration and improvement of habitats and green spaces when building new housing, commercial or infrastructure developments, while requiring that habitat to be maintained for at least 30 years.

In England, biodiversity net gain is required under a statutory framework introduced by Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (inserted by the Environment Act 2021). This statutory framework is referred to as ‘biodiversity net gain’ in Planning Practice Guidance to distinguish it from other or more general biodiversity gains.

The biodiversity gain condition is a pre-commencement condition: once planning permission has been granted, a Biodiversity Gain Plan must be submitted and approved by the planning authority before commencement of the development.

What is the process to acquire BNG units from Wild Heritage BNG?

Step 1

Undertake required ecological assessment of your development plans in the planning stage, in line with planning requirements. This will provide you with a calculated metric to identify the number and habitat type of biodiversity net gain units you need to purchase from an off site BNG provider.

Step 2

Contact us with your BNG unit requirements to obtain a price and find out more about the units we have.

Contact us on 07983 273104 or email us at info@wildheritagebng.co.uk

Step 3

Once your BNG unit requirements are confirmed, we will work to guide you through the legal covenant agreement process for us to assign the units to your development.

Step 4

Once legal agreements are in place, our role is to continue habitat creation and enhancement, and management of the land where your BNG units are situated.
